This is for Briggs and Stratton-powered 3000 and 4000 series tractors.  
 
If you are having ignition or starting issues or poor running conditions with your Vanguard-powered tractor good chances it’s the coil system. If 1 cylinder seems weaker, skips, off time, cooler, hotter you may have an issue with your coil system.  Some other indicators of an issue could be if you notice some black smoke, backfires, fouling spark plugs, less power, or runs more erratic with the mower deck or blower turned on.  Also, if your machine won't start, won’t shut off right away, etc these are just some possible symptoms indicating your issue could be coming from the coil system. 
 
The diode wire is very important and should be replaced when coils are and we always recommend replacing coils in pairs. This is a pretty simple job but the motor has to come out to do it. The good news is the Briggs Ingersoll’s engine can be completely out in less than an hour for most.

We highly recommend replacing your key switch at this time.  The key switch and the wire from it going to the coil diode shut-down wire are the only parts left in your ignition system to replace along with two new spark plugs. We recommend replacing the key switch and two new spark plugs available at check out.

    replacement coils for 16hp vanguard engine

    the coils arrived quickly and were the correct part , but I had also requested two (2) spark plugs and was billed for them but they were not included in the package. I had to go down to the auto parts store and buy 2 plugs.

    Sorry to hear this but you SHOULD have reached out to us directly right away! We would have made it right. Leaving this info on a review does neither one of us any good now... We do not always see reviews nor have all your info.... So not sure how mentioning a simple overlook through a review helps any when you did not even try to reach out directly so we could have made it right....
